Guru and disciple

Teacher…

A compulsive book buyer/ collector that I am, I often find myself in a book store when out to run an errand or if I have sometime to myself before I catch up with friends over the weekend. My husband often compares me with a child who is amused and excited to be in Disney Land or in a world class toy store – Hamleys. He says I bear on my face and in my eyes same excitement and enthusiasm as that of a child!

Although a murder mystery fan, I have recently started to explore other genres and books set in different time period. Emma, the book I am reading currently, is the result of that exercise. Another great book that I came across during one such trip (yes trip, coz going to a book store is like Narnia to me – a different world altogether!) to a book store is a book called “tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom. What attracted to me was three simple words in the tag line – “an old man, a young man and life’s greatest lesson“.

While reading the third chapter of this book, “The Third Tuesday – We Talk About Regrets”, I came across a line – “we all need teachers in our lives” and it bought back that longing for a teacher in my life and is also the reason why I wrote this post.

Life has been very kind to me (Thank you) in it that every problem that I faced, I have managed to find a way out. And the help has come from various sources – be it books, long chats with my sister (who is also my BFF), talking it out with family and friends ~ they all have been a great source of inspiration and learning. I am very lucky to have a proper education (thank you my wonderful parents) and then as you grow up and start to do your thing, you come across various kinds of people and experiences in life and everyone and everything teaches you something – Life is the best teacher of all!

But even then I miss a teacher’s presence in my life. I have always wished that I too had a Teacher/Guru with whom I can talk to whenever I am confused, low, in doubt, anxious or just happy ~ a teacher who can show me the right path, help me understand the world around me and in me! Not sure if I ever will find any or maybe I have and I don’t know yet! (Told you.. I love mysteries)

What about you? Do you have a teacher with whom you can talk about everything? Somebody to guide you, help you? Do share your experience. Be glad to read about it.

When I Am Not Writing…

When I am not writing, there are a lot of things that I do/ would love to do. Listing them below, in no specific order: –

I like to catch up on my reading ~ There is a long list of to-read waiting for me. Currently I am reading a classic by Jane Austen, “Emma”. It is totally different from what I read generally. I am a big fan of murder mysteries and needless to say, huge fan of Agatha Christie 🙂

I love gardening so when I am not writing, I tend to my plants and love to spend some time in my balcony garden. And am always ready to add new plants to my collection. Some of the recently added members in my garden-

I love cooking and I think it’s a very soothing exercise. I feel all happy and energized when I cook. Works like a stress buster for me 🙂

Listen to music – like to listen to various kinds of music be it Bollywood, Pop, Hip-Hop, Classic, Rock – not a very choosy type. It all depends on my mood.

One of my all-time favorite activity – planning and making lists and bucket lists. So when I am not writing, I get time to think about various things in life, my goals, dreams and ambitions. I get to measure as to where I stand as of now and what should be my next course of action.

Love to watch sitcoms. Imagine a day of doing nothing, sitcoms all day, a glass or two of wine, or maybe a bottle 😉

Travel shows – I am a huge huge fan of travel shows. It’s like you get to travel the City without moving from your couch. I mean, I would love to move away from my couch, all right! It’s just that you can’t just leave. But blessed are those souls who get to travel so much and gain wonderful experiences. Lucky them!

DIYs – When I am not writing, I work on my projects. Presently, I am in the planning phase [my favorite phase 😉 ]… I wish to hand paint a couple of chants from the Hindu scripture and I am deciding upon various factors like – what form would be the best one? Should I go in for color combination or a single color would look best? What size it should be? et cetera et cetera…. Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Catch up with social media – Twitter, Pinterest et cetera. Apart from the fun part, there are so many wonderful thoughts and ideas that keep pouring in on these social sites, they work as my constant stream of motivation.

What gets you all refreshed and rejuvenated?

Love Yourself

That One Love Affair We All Must Have!

In the grand scheme of things, when we think about life, our thoughts invariably are drawn to family, friends, work, colleagues, neighbours et cetera. While it is good to think about people and things that matter the most to us, we very conveniently, forget that one person – the MOST important person. Who are we talking about? Domestic help, you may say… after all, today’s lifestyle is such that we can’t do without a good household help. But no…. the person I am talking about here is the one who is reading the article right now (writing the article in my case!)

Ever wonder, why is it that we are at the end of our lists always? Are we conditioned that way? Why can’t we be at the top of the list and not feel guilty about it? Or be free from the fear of being perceived as a selfish person? And before you go on blaming the world – stop right there! You are equally responsible for this and that makes you a partner in crime. How? While your loved ones are excited about a project or helpless about a situation, you don the role of a “superperson” at the drop of a hat and leave no stone unturned for them. But let us not forget that we are mere mortal human beings and we all deserve some time off, some pampering and TLC ourselves. As they say in the flight cabin before the flight takes off, “please make sure you have the oxygen mask before you go on helping others.”

I realize this when I was reading Vinita Dawra Nangia’s article “Give yourself a break”, also the prompt for this article. We don’t think twice before helping others out but when it comes to us, there is a long list of ifs and buts waiting for us and taking an off becomes a project in itself considering the amount of planning and thinking goes into it, not to mention the endless discussions regarding how and when!

If this situation sounds too familiar, then you need is to fall in love… have an affair and a passionate one! What? Am I crazy? Nope… I am talking about falling in love with yourself again. Look out for yourself, be your own best friend, love yourself for who you are and the way you are. Because only when you love yourself unconditionally and are happy inside, it makes all the difference in the world outside.

Let’s Get (corpo) Real!

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Finite Creatures.”

We all know we are finite creatures; mortal beings and yet we go on living our lives like we are going to live forever. All of us, rather most of us, or even few of us (not sure how many of us) go through our lives feeling bad about something, holding a grudge against somebody, garnering feelings of hatred, being disrespectful of other’s feelings, being abused by others, being insulted by others et cetera for what seems like forever. So, if we all know we are mortal beings then why we put up with certain things? Why do we behave in a certain way? Why can’t we let go? Do we need a reminder every day that we are mortal? No, I am saying you should just leave everything and go meditating rest of your life…nope! After all, we have this one life and the least or the best we can do is to LIVE THIS LIFE!

We mortal beings go through many things in life – we face ups and downs, we have achievements to be proud of, failures to learn from, best days to be grateful for and enjoy to the fullest and worst days to be balanced and take each day as it comes – each stage leaves us with many memories, long lasting relationships, lessons and these experiences help us be a better and a stronger person. Am I being an idealist here? No. Do we not act and react to situations based on how we feel? Most of us do. I do. Maybe that’s practical.

But maybe, there are times when if we are more aware and practice some self-control, we might actually be building a better place for all of us to live in. Instead of dealing with pent up feelings, grudges, hatred, revenge, handling egos every day like it’s the most normal thing and nothing bad can ever come out of it, we would rather concentrate on turning things around, for better. Sometimes all it needs is an action – a first step and things could change drastically. And for things that can’t be changed, consider letting it go. You don’t have to torture yourself and suffer. Let go of all the negativity and build on the good things in life. Life is beautiful – there are so many things to do, to see, to experience and to learn that there is no time to waste on such insignificant matters.

Like Blogging101, I would like to think of this life as Life101 – a class made by God to help us navigate through life by teaching us various things. Take each day as new assignment wherein we learn new things and sometimes just being a good neighbour/ good friend/ good colleague/ good life partner/ good parent et cetera. Our friends and family are The Commons for us where we can talk and share our happiness and sorrows, get advice and be a mentor. And just as we are not obligated to do all the exercises that we receive every day, we are always better off when do them. We learn a lot of things in the process, we make new friends and we strengthen the old ties and become a better person in the end!

Happy Blogging!

A Year of Firsts – Our First Valentine’s

Our first wedding anniversary is only a week away – flashes of memory of the year gone by leaves us with varied expressions on our faces and sweet memories ensure a grin from ear to ear, several times a day! One such memory is of our first valentine’s day. Read on…

“You have been married for 7 months (an arranged marriage!) and it’s your first Valentine’s Day – what to do, where to go and what about the gift – talk about the pressure right? You want to make sure that all your firsts (first anniversary, first birthdays, first valentine’s, first Diwali, Christmas or Id) are spent in such a way that they remain etched in your memories forever…..however cliché it sounds.

Like any normal couple, all excited, my husband and I start looking out for destinations to spend our first valentine’s together. Days pass and the excitement plummets as endless planning and discussions get overshadowed by daily chores and office pressure. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and the destinations we were really interested in are almost full and the prices have shoot up like crazy, after all resorts do rake in with all the last minute bookings. And so the obvious question – what do we do now? Should we forget the idea of going out and about and spend our first Valentine’s in the city or maybe even at our home! After all, there are all these articles everywhere suggesting various ways and means of spending Valentine’s Day right at home – cook your dinner together, take a spa day or have a spa day right at home et cetera.

One afternoon, while I was busy feeling bad that we might have not so special first valentine’s that’s when this sweet little thing called as world wide web came into picture and helped me out like an angel! I stumbled upon a website that provided us with a lake side camping with wine and chocolates…and boy I jumped with joy! After all the necessary transactions, I was relieved that now nothing can stop us from spending a very romantic valentine’s day. But, there is always a but… there was something that was going to stop us or so it felt like at that time, we might not be able to have a memorable valentine’s day.

After much delay, we finally started our journey. We decided to leave behind all the drama that was associated with the planning. Taking a sigh of relief, we head towards our destination with radio setting the mood for us – playing all romantic songs courtesy valentine’s day.

Both excited and nervous in anticipation whether or not our destination would match the pictures sent to us by the organizers, it was all put to rest as we reached our destination. First thought that came into our minds was “it was worth it”! A beautiful, pristine lake was right in front of us and 3 cute little camps set up for us in one corner.

There was a nice set up for us near the lake – we had our barbeques, enjoyed dinner and our lovey dovey conversations under the starlit sky. You don’t get to see so many stars when in the city – we were overwhelmed and hoped that we had one of those DSLR cameras to capture countless stars in the sky that shined like diamonds! We decided to retire a little early for the day in the hope of not losing out on the beautiful morning the next day.

Woke up quite early (around 6 o’ clock) and was ready with our cameras and phones…. Hoping to capture the sunrise! We took as many pictures as we could while being in awe as the sky turned from blue to orange and the reflections on the clouds changed from yellow to orange and looked nothing short of a beautiful painting!

After being satisfied with our photographic efforts, we decided to climb down and pay the charming pristine lake a visit. Everywhere we looked, the views were fascinating and the surroundings so calm, it felt as if we have been transported to a parallel world! We were spellbound and bewitched!”

It was finally time to head back home – refreshed and rejuvenated and all over in love again! Despite all the drama, we managed to have a fabulous first valentine’s day – one that we would never forget!

So, what’s your Valentine story? Do share 🙂
